In The Myth of Morality, Richard Joyce argues that moral discourse is hopelessly flawed. At the heart of ordinary moral judgements is a notion of moral inescapability, or practical authority, which, upon investigation, cannot be reasonably defended. Joyce argues that natural selection is to blame, in that it has provided us with a tendency to invest the world with values that it does not contain, and demands that it does not make. Should we therefore do away with morality, as we did away with other faulty notions such as witches? Possibly not. We may be able to carry on with morality as a "useful fiction" — allowing it to have a regulative influence on our lives and decisions, perhaps even playing a central role — while not committing ourselves to believing or asserting falsehoods, and thus not being subject to accusations of "error."

Background:
I first encountered John Mackie’s 1977 book Ethics: Inventing Right and Wrong as an undergraduate, in a course taught by Krister Segerberg at Auckland University. I recall thinking “Well, that all seems obviously true.” Years later, at Princeton, I was introduced to the idea of fictionalism — mostly in lectures by Gideon Rosen in reference to Bas van Fraassen’s constructive empiricism. Putting together Mackie’s brand of moral skepticism with fictionalism formed the basis of my PhD dissertation, which was entitled The Myth of Morality. I wrote this in 1996-1997 under the supervision of Gil Harman and Gideon.
One of my examiner’s reports, by Sarah Broadie, would later describe the opening chapter of the dissertation as “tortuous.” I confess that at the time I was under the impression that this meant the same thing as “torturous.” (The offending chapter did, I’m sure, have both qualities.) The other examiner, Harry Frankfurt, suggested that the material would make for a good book project. I followed his advice, and over the next 2-3 years radically rewrote the whole thing (dropping that tortuous/torturous chapter!), while lecturing at the University of Sheffield and living in the village of Oughtibridge.
The hardback edition of the book was published by Cambridge University Press in 2001, though I was slightly annoyed to discover that CUP had accidentally omitted Michael Smith's dustjacket endorsement, leaving a conspicuous blank space. This was subsequently rectified for the paperback edition, but now David Lewis's back-cover endorsement, which had previously commended my book for making a persuasive case that make-believe moralizing could be "unconfused and honest" (see above), had mysteriously become the less supportive claim (though possibly more accurate one) that I make a persuasive case that make-believe moralizing could be "confused and honest." Hmph.
My latest book, Morality: From Error to Fiction (OUP, 2024) is a sequel to The Myth of Morality.
